Why we should be wearing sun cream in winter!

Sun cream isn’t just for Summer. Our skin is very delicate and needs protecting in both summer and winter. Ultraviolet rays are always present, despite what many people think they are not connected to outside temperatures. Ultraviolet rays are instead connected to the sun, no matter where you are in the world the sun remains present in our skies throughout the day, even behind those annoying clouds.  We need to stay protected!

UV rays are the main cause of skin damage and skin cancer worldwide. It is these rays that can also cause your skin to age prematurely, adding an additional 10 years in some cases. But how does this happen you ask? Too much exposure to the sun can cause the death of skin cells found within the deeper layers of our skin. It is these fibres and cells called elastin that break down and cause the skin to sag, stretch and discolour. It is something that can be easily prevented with the regular application of sun cream, but is easily forgotten about in winter.

Sunburn is common even across those cold winter months. Snow and ice both reflect UV rays meaning winter months could be more dangerous than summer ones. The likelihood is that you stay all wrapped up from the cold, but don’t let that fool you, your skin is still exposed i.e. your face, neck and hands.

Let us answer a question that we know many of you might be wondering, can UV rays pass through glass? The simple answer, yes it can. UV rays can pass through glass, although your skin can’t burn through glass UV rays continue to cause damage. Keep this in mind if you like sitting or if you work next a window.
